Building a Non-Toxic Home

Published: April 27, 2024 | Corinne Segura, Building Biologist

When building a non-toxic home it’s important to choose all materials for the individual. Especially if the homeowner is chemically sensitive, material choices will differ from person to person.

In terms of the materials, I would definitely avoid in a non-toxic home, even for those who are not sensitive, see my article on the ten most toxic materials used in new builds (or renovations).

In terms of which materials I would use, the articles below comprise the series of healthy building materials. For each section you will have to go over the pros of cons to choose the best materials for you.

I offer one-on-one consulting if you need individual help choosing materials.

Here is the series on building or renovating a non-toxic home suitable for the chemically sensitive:

Non-Toxic Foundations

Non-Toxic Roofs

Non-Toxic Siding

Non-Toxic Sheathing/Decking/Subfloor

Alternative Wall Systems (Alternatives to the Standard Wood Framed Walls)

Non-Toxic Drywall

Need an alternative to drywall? You might consider MgO Board.

Non-Toxic Plaster, an Alternative to Paint

Non-Toxic Flooring
