Three Safavieh Rugs Reviewed (Not-Sponsored)

Published: March 30, 2025 | Corinne Segura, Building Biologist

Safavieh makes eco-friendly very well-priced rugs in wool, cotton, sisal and jute.

The company has stated that they don’t treat the rugs with any insect repellents, stain repellents, or flame-retardant chemicals, nor permethrin for the wool.

Their synthetic rugs are OEKO-TEX 100 Certified. This means:

  • They are free of PFAS.
  • Certain flame-retardant chemicals are not allowed – from “tris” to boric acid.
  • Heavy metals, pesticide residue, chlorinated phenols, phthalates, organic tin, other harmful chemical residues, harmful dyes, PAHs, solvent residues, are all limited.

They are one of the best-priced OEKO-TEX rug options out there.

The natural rugs may not be certified but they still claim they are free of pesticides, stain repellents and flame retardants.

We are reviewing three Safavieh rugs:

  • Striped Kilim Rug black/ivory – 90% Cotton, 10% Wool – From under $40 to over $300 depending on size
  • Rag Rug Collection Accent Rug – 100% cotton – From 20-something dollars to around $300 depending on the size.
  • Striped Kilim Rug ivory/grey – 100% cotton – From under $40 to over $300 depending on size

I asked Hailee, a reader of the site, these questions about the rugs:

Hailee has been using the rugs for 2.5 months now. We will update this over time to see how they hold up.

Why did you choose cotton over wool (or other materials)?

I chose cotton so that I could wash them in the washing machine!

Is it easy to vacuum or wash them?

Yes!

The two smaller ones (the runner and the 3×5) wash great in the washer! (So far they have been washed two and three times, respectively).

The 4×6 was a little too big for my washing machine and caused it to leak.

Next time I want to wash that one, I will hand-wash it or bring it to a laundromat.

They are all SO easy to vacuum!

I vacuum each weekly, and try to wash once every 1-2 months.

How do they feel underfoot?

They are soft and add some cushion.

The gray one has different patterns so you can feel those as you’re walking.

We only have hard floors in our home, so these rugs add comfort underfoot.

They are not super plush, but we feel like they help with adding comfort.

Does it need something to keep it in place?

We don’t have anything to keep them in place.

Natural rubber is recommended but according to our Marmoleum floor dealer, natural rubber can’t be used on it.

I was going to get the natural rubber underlayment for the rug on the tile, but haven’t seen a need for it yet.

The rugs do slide around a bit when our cats are running around, which we expected with nothing underneath, but we are ok with this.

Did the rugs have an odor?

I remember smelling the rugs when I got them because I had heard [other reviewers say this], but no, I did not notice a strong odor.

Maybe just a faint smell, but nothing overwhelming.

I washed all of them right away, and none of them have any smells or odors.

How do they hold up to washing?

I have washed all of them in the washing machine, and all held up great and I don’t notice any differences after washing.

Someone said: “We have wood floors and a dog so the rug is consistently moving, shifting, and stretching even with heavy furniture on top of it and using rug stays/tape/adhesive squares, etc.”

Has that happened to you?

We have two cats and the rugs definitely move when they are chasing each other.

This is to be expected because we don’t have any grippers.

How are they holding up in general (pilling, unraveling, shedding, wearing, etc)?

They are holding up great! I  have noticed no difference in quality, wearing, etc, even after washing.

Corinne here: Some people have said their wool rugs shed a lot (this is common of wool rugs so it’s hard to tell if that was an unusual amount). Some people also said the wool rugs are harder to wash, which is also normal.

Were the dimensions accurate?

Yes!

Anything else you liked or didn’t like about them?

I love how they look – they are beautiful!

I also love how they didn’t have a backing (which is usually toxic), could be washed in the washing machine, and according to the company, they are free from flame retardants, moth proofing, and PFAS, which were all non-negotiables for me when searching for rugs!

I also loved the price point.

OK, thank you, Hailee!

Hi! I was wondering if the company specified that all their natural rugs are Oeko-Tex certified? All I can find on their website is this: “All Safavieh rugs made using synthetic yarns such as polyester and polypropylene, are tested and certified safe for the chemical agents specified by Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX testing protocols.” I haven’t seen a certification claim on any of their natural fiber rugs yet, so I’m a bit confused.
