IKEA Neiden Bed Frame & Luroy Slats Firsthand Review

Published: June 29, 2024 | Corinne Segura, Building Biologist

This is a firsthand review of the IKEA NEIDEN bed frame LURÖY slatted bed base.

(They come separately, the bed doesn’t come with slats).

Overview:

This is a review of the twin-sized NEIDEN bed, though it does come in larger sizes.

The bed frame is made of all solid pine, no glues and no engineered wood, so it’s a completely non-toxic option.

The slats are laminated plywood so there are some glues used there, but IKEA is ahead of the pack when using non-toxic glues.

The reviewer is chemically sensitive.

We look at assembly, sturdiness, and what you need to know so that the bed doesn’t break and the mattress doesn’t collapse.

The NEIDAN frame in the twin size is $49 and the LUROY slats (which are necessary) are $30 in the US.

Overall we think it’s a decent option for this budget range.

For more non-toxic bed frames from IKEA, see this article.

Fragrance: IKEA stores sell or use fragranced items, but online orders for delivery ship from central warehouses not their store locations.

Review of IKEA Neiden & Luroy Slats

How easy was it to put together?

It only took one person and was easy to moderate.

The slats were all one piece and already put together so that part was easy.

How sturdy does it feel?

Note: A few people have reported that the bed broke where there were large knots in the wood on the long sides. You should check your bed before assembling it to check for large knots in the longer pieces.

It does feel flimsier.

It definitely feels more like dorm room furniture or a bed you’d sleep on at a summer camp, but I think it would work for a child or teen’s bedroom.

Both my husband and I have sat and laid on it with no issues but we are smaller people (both under 5’5″ and under 130 lbs).

It can hold two adults without giving way at all.

Did you buy this for a child or adult guest room?

We bought this for a child/teen room (foster care) but my adult brother who is almost 6 feet tall and his partner both slept on it successfully!

I have no idea how they fit but they said it felt very sturdy and it held them both.

They did say the mattress was uncomfortable but the frame itself was very sturdy.

What kind of mattress did you use, does this fit standard mattress sizes?

This would fit a standard twin mattress.

We went with the IKEA AGOTNES mattress ($69).

It’s not as non-toxic as I’d like it to be but we plan on upgrading it in the future.

For an overview of non-toxic mattresses from IKEA see this post.

Can it be disassembled?

It definitely could be disassembled but it’s also light and small enough that it wouldn’t be hard to move in one piece.

I would probably move it without disassembling as long as I had a truck or SUV.

Are you going to paint or stain it?

I don’t have plans to paint or stain it at this time, but I might regret that with kids sleeping on it (since the wood has no protection).

Corinne here, If you are looking for non-toxic ways to paint or seal pine (without the tannins bleeding through, see this article).

Does it make any noises when you sit on it?

When we installed the slats just sitting on top of the frame underneath the mattress, we could hear them move a little when we sat on it roughly (making the mattress slide).

However, after I stretched the slats out based on the comment below (using the pegs to create tension) I no longer heard any noise.

Note: it’s important to install the slats correctly, see below this section, or the mattress could collapse.

Do the slats stay in place easily?

Important: There are four wooden pins that hold the slats firmly on the bed. You need to make sure those pins go all the way into the designated holes, and this will stretch the slats into a state of tension. The tension prevents the slats from sliding under the mattress or falling out. Those who said the bed fell out had not installed the slats correctly.

The pegs do create tension in the slats if installed correctly.

We installed the slats against the bend (they had a very slight “u” shaped curve) so that the slates were convex towards the bottom of the mattress.

This along with the tension the pegs create makes it seem unlikely that the slats would slip off of the frame.

I honestly don’t see a way they could slip off the frame unless they broke because they are longer than the frame opening and even if they bent slightly with use, I don’t think it would be enough to cause them to fall off the frame unless they actually broke.

I could see them breaking if a larger adult used the bed regularly or if a kid was jumping on the bed a lot.

Does the middle of the bed cave in when you are on the mattress or does it seem level?

It is level but that could change with time and use, especially if it’s used by a larger adult.

Thanks for the review Kylee!

Maybe, but the way that the tension fit into the beds is very specific, so you’d have to see if what you find works on a practical, structural, functional level.
