Cost of Wool Carpet, Brand Comparison + Install

Published: February 27, 2024 | Corinne Segura, Building Biologist

This article is going to get right to the point. How much does wool carpet cost – how much is the carpet itself per square foot by brand in 2024 and how much does it typically cost when you include the wool padding/underlayment and installation?

This article contains affiliate links, upon purchase I earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two wool carpet samples one is an offwhie large berber and theother is a mid toned gray smaller berber

Cost of the Wool carpet with Install

Andy Pace from the Green Design Center – Building for Health, explains that the total cost of installing wool carpet will look something like this:

  • Wool carpet usually is within the $5-10 / sq ft range (see prices per brand above)
  • Wool pad runs about $2.50 / sq ft
  • Labor to install is about $2.00 / sq ft more or less based on prep work, furniture to move, etc.

I would recommend going with The Green Design Center for the purchase of the carpet as you will get good support there.

Brands for those who are sensitive to chemicals

Note that only some wool carpet brands are free of that “new carpet smell”. The best brands for the chemically sensitive are Earthweave and Nature’s Carpet.

You might also consider Unique Carpets Ltd, J Mish, and Kaleen.

There are also mothproofing Permethrin chemicals in most but not all brands. This chemical does not have an odor but can be a trigger for people with chemical sensitives in my experience.

There is more information in my article on non-toxic carpets.
