The Best Organic Mattresses for Kids Compared

Published: February 20, 2024 | Corinne Segura, Building Biologist

These days there are many organic mattress options for kids who are sensitive to harsh chemicals and for families who want an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Organic mattresses are perfect for little ones transitioning out of a crib, and older children who are sensitive to chemicals.

Organic materials are better for the environment and some certifications go further than organic to address chemical treatments used throughout the whole manufacturing process.

My list of organic beds for kids includes specific mattress features, certifications, and price points. In addition to natural latex mattresses, I’ve included non-latex memory foam and latex-free all-natural material alternatives, too.

Organic bedding companies realize that buying an organic mattress is a large purchase, and they want you to love your new bed! Therefore, most offer a generous trial period to ensure your child’s comfort.

Organic Certifications:

GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard or GOTS is the gold standard for organic certification that also certifies what chemicals can be used in cleaning, dyeing, and processing fabrics.

A textile product carrying the GOTS label grade ‘organic’ must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers whereas a product with the label grade ‘made with organic’ must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibers.

All chemical inputs (e.g. dyes, auxiliaries, and process chemicals) must be evaluated and meet basic requirements on toxicity and biodegradability. There is a ban on toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano particles, genetically modified organisms, and their enzymes.

The use of synthetic sizing agents is restricted; knitting and weaving oils must not contain heavy metals. Bleaches must be based on oxygen (no chlorine bleaching). Azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds are prohibited. Discharge printing methods using aromatic solvents and plastisol printing methods using phthalates and PVC are prohibited. Restrictions for accessories (e.g. no PVC, nickel, or chrome permitted, all polyester must be post-consumer recycled from 2014 onwards). Packaging material must not contain PVC. From 1 January 2014 onwards, any paper or cardboard used in packaging material, hang tags, swing tags, etc. must be post-consumer recycled or certified in accordance with FSC or PEFC.

All PFAS (Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances) are prohibited.

GOLS – The Global Organic Latex Standard or GOLS means a product must contain more than 95% certified organic raw natural latex. The GOLS standard also features permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements, and polymer and filler percentages.

It prohibits polyurethane foam and some flame retardants, colorants, and allergenic dyes. It requires low emission of VOCs including formaldehyde.

VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) Offgassing

While GreenGuard Gold may be the only certification that can certify offgassing down to fairly low levels, in my article on mattresses that have GreenGuard Gold certification I found that any mattress type (any material) can qualify for this certification.

Polyurethane does offgas low levels of VOCs, which go down with time. Memory foam, a type of polyurethane, is usually a little higher in offgassing.

Natural latex also offgasses, Essentia has been one of the only companies to share their VOC levels. A few years ago they reported their VOC levels as 36 μg /m3. This is very very low, and some of these VOCs will be naturally occurring compounds, but it’s not zero. Natural latex is also a common allergen.

The lowest offgassing options on this list are the options without latex or polyurethane.

1. Savvy Rest

Tranquility Twin Mattress

This option is the only fully customizable option on this list for picky sleepers. One type of natural latex is organic and the other isn’t. The wool and cotton layers are organic. There are no glues.

This is a great choice for toddlers, little kids, and youths. The Tranquility medium-firm 7” mattress contains two 3” layers of natural latex.

You can customize your order for firmness and latex choice. Dunlop is a firmer and certified organic latex. The Dunlop Latex is USDA and GOLS-certified organic. Or, you can opt for the Talalay, a softer hypoallergenic and breathable natural foam latex (which is not organic), for one or both of the latex layers.

Each 38” x 74” twin mattress also has GOTS-certified organic wool batting as a natural flame retardant and an unbleached GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. The bed is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions.

No fiberglass, no flame retardants, no glues.

The Tranquility all-natural organic mattress runs between $1,699-1,729, depending on your latex layer choices. Savvy Rest offers a 100-day trial period and possible layer exchanges.

2. My Green Mattress

Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress

This natural latex option includes 2 inches of natural latex (compared to 1 inch in the Avocado option). All the layers are organic. The only glues used are the ones between the coils.

For a perfectly natural kids’ mattress that’s also suitable for trundle or bunk beds, Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress at 38” x 75” x 8” has you covered. You can also use this mattress on any hard platform or bed frame.

This superior mattress offers a full two inches of firm GOLS-certified organic latex, covered with certified organic wool and cotton. It also features a pocketed steel coil section for resiliency and support. Tighter coils around the edges make sitting on the bed easy.

The GOTS-certified wool layers are fire-resistant, without the use of chemicals. No fiberglass. No glues between the layers, but there is some GOTS-approved glue between the coils.

Hand-tufted quilting ensures the materials stay in place, and this one-sided mattress is super cushiony.

The Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified and is also California Proposition 65 compliant to show that it has no carcinogenic materials.

The mattress sells for $599, with free shipping and a generous 365-night free trial period.

3. Birch Living

Birch Kids Natural Mattress

Another natural latex-based option to consider, this option does not offer organic latex but the other layers are organic. They also do use glue between the layers.

Birch’s Kids Natural Mattress is an 8” thick hybrid natural/organic option. It features a layer of natural latex (not organic), a core section of latex with wrapped coils, plus top and bottom organic wool layers and a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.

Made of natural materials, the bed is free of fiberglass and flame retardants and water-based glues are used between the layers. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions

A two-sided flippable design is the bed’s best feature. There’s a firmer side for younger 3-7-year-olds and a softer, plush side for use as your child grows up to 8-12 years (or older).

This twin mattress is priced at $842, although Birch often offers sales, so you might find the mattress for less.

Birch offers a 100-day trial period, free USA shipping, and set-up options.

4. Plush Beds

The Healthy Hybrid Mattress For Kids

Another good option in the natural latex category, compared to Avocado (1 inch latex), this has 1.5 inches of natural latex. And like Avocado all the layers are organic, and there are no glues.

Plush Beds offers the Healthy Hybrid Mattress for Kids which is a 38” x 75” hybrid organic mattress with excellent features for comfort and health.

This award-winning mattress has a GOLS-certified latex layer with individually wrapped support coils. The coils provide good stability for growing kids.

Also included are GOTS-certified organic wool layering and a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.

This mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions. No chemical flame retardants or fiberglass. For the fire-resistant barrier, they use either wool or a natural plant fiber. No adhesives.

The Plush Beds Healthy Mattress For Kids comes at an affordable price of $689, and it’s often on sale, too. It comes with a 100-day free trial period, free shipping, and a generous return policy, but the mattress has a great success record for keeping kids happy!

5. Naturepedic

2-in-1 Organic Kids Waterproof Mattress

This is a highly trusted, very transparent company and this option has no latex or foam, all materials are organic apart from the PLA. They go all the way with avoiding chemicals including avoiding glues between the layers and the coils. This option might be the only option on the list that doesn’t offgas any VOCs (though it does have a natural cotton smell).

Are you looking for an all-natural vegan-suitable bed with no latex or foam? Naturepedic’s 2-in-1 kids bed is an excellent non-toxic mattress option.

This GOTS-certified mattress is two-sided. The quilted plush side is made of soft GOTS-certified organic cotton for non-allergenic comfort. Flip the bed to use the second organic cotton side that gets its waterproofing superpowers from PLA, a non-GMO sugarcane-derived polyester.

Free from off-gassing chemicals, this non-toxic bed doesn’t expose your kids to any fumes and qualifies for GREENGUARD Gold certification. It’s also certified as formaldehyde-free.

A favorite brand amongst the chemically sensitive, Naturepedic is a brand I trust a lot and my favorite option on this list. Naturepedic uses organic wool as the natural flame retardant (no fiberglass and no chemical flame retardants). No glues between the layer or within/around the coils.

With several layers of natural organic cotton batting and a strong 6” coil layer, this standard twin mattress measures in at 38″ x 75″ x 7″, and sells for $799. The 2-in-1 Kids Mattress is also available in a trundle size and a short trundle size, each for $699.

Naturepedic offers a 100-day free trial and free shipping within the continental USA.

6. Joybeds

Joybed LX Twin Mattress

This option has no latex or foam, but the only organic layer is the cover. While this is the most affordable option on the list, I don’t know what’s going on with the company as their email address bounces back.

Another choice for an all-natural bed with no latex or foam is Joybeds LX Twin Mattress for kids. It’s made of natural cotton, wool, and plant fibers.

The Joybed LX twin is approximately 75″L x 38″W x 10″H, with four layers, and has a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. The inner layers include cotton (not organic), “Eco-Wool”, and coils.

Wool is naturally anti-microbial and also heat-wicking for cooler sleep all year round. The plant fiber-based fire barrier layer is made from 100% flame-resistant natural bean or potato starch. It’s not clear exactly what kind of fabric that is. I did not hear back from the company on if this barrier layer contains chemical flame retardants, if the foam contains flame retardants, or if glues are used in the bed.

They say that this all-natural bed contains no toxic chemicals and they claim it has absolutely no smell right out of the box.

The mattress is mid-range firm, for comfort through the night. Inner natural fiber coils provide necessary support.

With a 120-night free trial and free shipping, this $495 twin bed is a great option for a natural latex-free and foam-free mattress.

7. Avocado

a women lifting the corning of an avocado mattress which is quite thick onto a wooden slated bed frame

Hybrid Eco Organic Kids Mattress

This is the most affordable of the natural latex mattresses on the list. It is also fully organic in all layers and contains no suspect additives like glues.

The Hybrid Eco Organic Mattress is made with 660 6” encased coils and 1-inch of GOLS-certified organic latex. GOTS-certified organic cotton and organic wool deliver breathable top layers.

They use no chemical flame retardants, glues, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams.

It’s MADE SAFE certified and GREENGUARD GOLD as well.

The low-profile design is perfect for bunk beds or their new kids’ trundle bed frame. To add structural support to an existing bed frame, consider their Bunkie Board.

A twin is $584 and they offer a 100-night sleep trial.

Savvy Rest organic latex mattress is odor free in my experience with their 2 large (largest size they have) latex dog beds. Formed latex (not shredded latex) and both beds have no odor. (My dog has arthritis and it is very difficult to find an orthopedic pet bed that meets the criteria I would want for my own bed) I can’t speak to how comfortable it would be for a child to sleep on, but my friend often lays on it and says it’s better than his memory foam mattress. My dog also always chooses to sleep on her savvy rest beds over her other beds. Mainly I can say savvy rest latex is not smelly (like my part-latex avocado mattress is, for comparison) and also their customer service is great.
