My requirements for a non-toxic floor mat are:
- No SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) – this has a relatively high odor and is usually higher VOCs. It can also contain contaminants of concern if it’s from recycled sources (like recycled tires).
- No PVC (poly vinyl chloride aka “vinyl”), often high odor and higher in VOCs, (though there is some low odor/lower VOC PVC). It’s not a very environmentally friendly plastic and does contain plasticizers (sometimes phthalates).
- If TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer), it must be phthalate-free. It’s likely that floor mats are made of TPE-O or TPE-V. These are usually extremely low in odor and VOCs and so are a top choice.
- Ideally no Prop 65 Warning, however this is not always a dealbreaker for floor mats, depending on what the warning is for.

TPE Floor Liner Mats
This is my top choice.
WeatherTech Trim-to-Fit Mat is made to fit virtually any vehicle due to its shaping and Trim-to-Fit features.
The Trim-to-Fit Mats are for driver and passenger mats and for the backseat.
They also have heavy duty car floor mats and mats designed to fit specific car models (which includes all the most popular makes and models).
- Made from Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) rubber-like compound that is an OEM approved (which includes among other things that the TPE compound must come from a supplier that’s audited for consistent quality control).
- Virtually odorless
- This brand contains no phthalates, BPA, latex, cadmium or lead
- 100% recyclable
- Stays flexible in cold temperatures, and is UV stable
- The most durable material option on my list
- Come in three colors
- Most of their products are made in the USA
- No Prop 65 warning on the trim to fit
Another good brand of TPE floor mats which clearly state the material and claim to be phthalate-free is 3W. However, a downside for me is that they use at least 50% recycled content (and I don’t know the source of that). They are not made in the USA.
Natural Rubber Car Floor Mats
Image Premium brand car floor mats from Turkey claim they are 100% natural latex rubber.
They say they are odorless though natural latex does have its own inherent natural odor.
The downsides are that it’s not as durable to motor oil and other chemicals.
It’s also not as durable to UV light though may have stabilizers in it.
If you prefer an all-natural plastic-free option and are not sensitive to natural latex this would be the one to go with.
- Universal Fit & Trim-to-Size: Fits most cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans with a customizable trim-to-fit design
- Presumedly plastic-free
- Made in Turkey
PU Faux Leather Liners
This style of faux leather mat/liner could be made of either PVC or PU (polyurethane) leather.
While I am not a big fan of PVC, I do like the PU leather quite a lot it is very safe for most people in terms of VOCs and it doesn’t contain PFAS or plasticizers (or any other significant/significant levels of chemicals of concern).
They also have some type of foam in the middle but that is usually blocked by the materials on the top and bottom.
If it’s not blocked, it’s possible that the foam could have a little bit of off-gassing (depending on the foam type).
There is a chance the foam has flame retardants like “tris”, which would be a concern for me.
The bottom looks to be a nylon on most brands and that’s not too bad as long as it’s not recycled nylon.
One brand that claims to be PU leather is FH Group.
Coco Coir Fiber Mats
Coco Mats have a natural latex rubber backing, vinyl PVC trim (minor quantity but it could contain phthalates), a rubber heal pad (mix of natural and recycled rubber, though they don’t say what type exactly so it could be SBR) and a coconut coir top.
Made in the USA to order.
(They also offer a nylon mat, but I would not go with recycled nylon myself as the carpet sources can very likely contain PFAS, flame retardants and other chemicals.)
Other brands:
- Husky Floor liners are listed as TPO on Amazon but have a Prop 65 warning on the website – that could indicate phthalates (it’s not clear).
- Motor Trend FlexTough All-Weather Mats – made with a “proprietary rubber blend”, potentially TPE but we don’t know for sure.
- Caterpillar (CAT) Odorless Rubber Mats – polymer not specified though it might be TPE. There is a Prop 65 warning.
