The following is a list of brands that have declared that their furniture is free of all Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Some have been independently tested for fluorine which is a marker of PFAS.
Some brands did show some cross-contamination of fluorine (which would mean there could be some PFAS contamination but PFAS were not intentionally added).
Certifications for PFAS
- Oeko-Tex 100 – as of 2024 Oeko-Tex certified products are free of PFAS.
- GOTS-certified organic fabrics are PFAS-free.
Regulations for PFAS in Furniture
PFAS in furniture will be banned by Minnesota in 2025, which will push the whole industry towards removing PFAS from furniture.

Upholstered Indoor Furniture (Free of PFAS)
1. Medley
Medley makes sofas, loveseats, sectionals, sleeper sofas, upholstered chairs, poufs, upholstered benches, and ottomans.
PFAS: All of their fabrics are free of PFAS.
Other eco-friendly specs:
Medley sofas are made with either polyurethane & polyester, or organic (GOLS certified) natural latex & wool, no-VOC glues, no flame retardants, fabric options that are all-natural or organic (none contain PFAS, and they are verified non-detect for PFAS in testing), solid alder frames with natural or zero-VOC finishes, and organic cotton internal frame lining.
See my review of a Medley sofa here!
2. The Futon Shop
The Futon Shop makes sofas, sleeper sofas, sectional sofas, upholstered chairs, and an upholstered rocking chair.
PFAS: All of their fabrics are free of PFAS.
Other Eco-Friendly Specs:
The sofas are made with solid pine (no glues) and have various options for the fill.
The seat cushion fill options include wool with coils, wool, and latex, or all three.
You can change the main fill to PLA (a more natural polyester) or upgrade to organic wool and latex.
(PLA, despite being a polyester, can be more hypoallergenic for some sensitive folks than natural materials like wool or latex).
The base arms and back of the sofa are made with natural latex, coconut coir, and natural wool encased in fabric.
3. Savvy Rest
Savvy Rest makes sofas, loveseats, armchairs, and ottomans.
PFAS:
All fabrics are free of added PFAS.
According to Mamavation’s test results there is some low-level fluorine in some of their fabrics, as there was with many other brands, which could indicate cross-contamination from other PFAS-treated fabrics or from the machinery.
Some of their swatches were non-detect for fluorine like their Duck Sweet Potato.
Other Eco-Friendly Specs:
The Verona Sofa from Savvy Rest is made with only solid maple in the frame (no plywood or particleboard), GOTS-certified organic upholstery (hemp and/or cotton), natural latex options for the cushions, and the option of linseed oil, a zero-VOC stain or unfinished feet.
No flame retardants are used and there are no stain-resistant coatings.
4. Cisco Home
Cisco Home makes sofas, loveseats, upholstered chairs, upholstered benches, ottomans, chaises, and daybeds.
PFAS:
They say their organic fabrics have no toxic treatments.
They have not been 100% clear about PFAS.
Other eco-friendly specs:
All of their products can be made to their Inside Green standard.
The Inside Green option contains organic natural latex instead of polyurethane, wrapped in either eco wool or feathers & down.
They use certified solid woods, organic cotton fabrics with no toxic treatments, jute and hemp instead of springs, and WOCA natural stains.
No flame retardants.
For more sofas that are super eco-friendly and free of PFAS, see my non-toxic sofa article.
5. Pottery Barn & West Elm
Pottery Barn and West Elm carry the full range of living room, dining room, bedroom, office and storage furniture.
PFAS:
Some of Pottery Barn’s fabric options are certainly free of PFAS like the Sunbrella and Crypton options.
For example, Performance Basketweave Slub Chambray and Chenille Basketweave Taupe were non-detect in independent testing by Mamavation for PFAS.
At West Elm (which is owned by the same company as Pottery Barn) you might check out some of their Sunbrella fabrics as well.
West Elm’s Deluxe Velvet Burnt Umber and Performance Yard Dyed Linen Graphite are just two examples that came up non-detect for PFAS in independent testing by Mamavation,
Other eco-friendly specs:
Both Pottery Barn and West Elm have GreenGuard Gold-certified sections.
No flame retardants.
6. IKEA
IKEA carries the full range of living room, dining room, bedroom, office, and storage furniture.
PFAS:
IKEA does not use PFAS on any items from furniture to rugs and pillows.
Mamavation tested IKEA swatches and there was no fluorine at all.
Eco-Friendly Specs:
IKEA is ahead of the pack on banning many toxins, including PFAS, lead, flame retardants, and more.
The only downside is that much of the furniture is made with engineered woods like particleboard (as opposed to solid wood and plywood) and those are made with glues.
- See my review of IKEA’s non-toxic furniture
- I also review IKEA’s non-toxic rugs
7. Crate & Barrel
Crate & Barrel carries the full range of living room, dining room, bedroom, office, and storage furniture.
PFAS:
Crate & Barrel eliminated PFAS from their upholstery (source).
Also as of 2023, the Livesmart website says their fabrics are free of PFAS.
Other eco-friendly specs:
They have a GreenGuard Gold section and all their foam is free of flame retardants.
8. Room and Board
Room and Board carries the full range of living room, dining room, bedroom, office, and storage furniture.
PFAS:
Room and Board have also eliminated PFAS from their fabrics (source).
Though according to Mamavation’s testing of their swatches, there were very low amounts of fluorine, not enough to indicate intentionally added PFAS, though there could be cross-contamination from other sources.
Other eco-friendly specs:
Some of the fabrics are GreenGuard Gold certified but I couldn’t pick up any major difference between those and their regular fabrics in terms of offgassing.
The frames are made from solid wood. The foam is regular polyurethane that is free of flame retardants, I did not see any memory foam options. They use no added antimicrobials.

Thank you, as always for all of this. One thing I wonder is as companies slooooooowly stop using PFAS in their products, what other toxic chemical do they replace it with? Kind of like all the hype about BPA free, except now they use BPS which they think is even more toxic than BPA. Seems like it’s an every-moving target.
Corinne Segura, Building Biologist
there is an article on the main new stain resistance chemicals that are used on fabrics. as for other uses of PFAS it depends on the usage as they are used in so many different areaas
