When choosing a Sherwin-Williams paint line first consider where it falls in the quality range, the VOC level, and additional features like is it washable.
Also note, not all paint lines can be tinted to all colors and not all can be mixed with custom colors.
All of their colorants are 0-VOC so they don’t add additional VOCs to the base level.
Sherwin-Williams also has more paint lines with added antimicrobials compared to other brands.
I don’t know which antimicrobials they add for this feature. (We have to say “added” because all latex paints have antimicrobials as the preservative in very small amounts).
Most Sherwin Williams lines are free of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), however, the company will not list out the full list of which ones are free of APEs after a number of calls and emails. The ones we know are free of APEs are listed in the article.
It’s not clear if Sherwin Williams uses PFAS in their paint.

1. Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology
The zero-VOC interior acrylic paint line, SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology, can reduce VOCs in the home, says the company.
This replaces Sherwin-Williams Harmony which was discontinued at the end of 2021.
What’s in SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology
Based on a patent by this company, it could be that their air-purifying paints contain sodium bicarbonate, zeolite, activated carbon, or cyclodextrin as an odor-absorbing agent.
The patent also describes possible odor-neutralizing agents like undecylenic acid, undecylenate silicone esters, chloramine-T, and zinc ricinoleate.
They mention that the paint can contain nano-titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or anatase titanium dioxide, which are capable of degrading odors in the presence of UV light. (Note that the white pigment in all paint is titanium dioxide). This process works in theory with some indirect sunlight or light through a window, but this photocatalytic process of breaking down VOCs works best when the sun hits titanium dioxide directly, unobstructed, says Dr. Steven S.C. Chuang who holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering.
They also list a possible fragrance added.
It does have a mildewcide/preservative which is not disclosed.
Note that the patent isn’t proof that that is what is in the paint, but only a possibility. Also, it’s likely the paint would contain just one chemical from each of those groups.
Looking for something similar? ECOS Paint also has an air purifying paint which provides a Declare Label of ingredients. The active ingredients of this 0-VOC acrylic paint are zeolite, non-nano titanium dioxide, and vanillin.

Where to Buy Sherwin-Williams Paint & Samples
You can buy their paint at Sherwin-Williams paint stores and online through their website.
Samples: They do sell peel-and-stick and color card samples. Get your peel-and-stick samples made with real paint here. You can stick them to the wall or tape them and move them around.
There are also quart-sized “color to go” samples, this paint is to see the color not to test out individual paint lines. The paint itself is lower quality than SuperPaint, but better than Promar 200. You can get them online and in-store.

Is the Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel the same as the Emerald line? How does that paint compare to other SW paints? I read online that people like the SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel for painting kitchen cabinets, so I’m considering this for our kitchen remodel project, but I have young kids and don’t want a bunch of toxic chemicals in our house. Any thoughts?
Carolyn
Is SW emerald typically tolerated by sensitive folks? Is it considered relatively safe at least? Considering this for my bathroom, where we used sw promar200 and it didn’t hold up well.
Corinne Segura, Building Biologist
I’m not sure, I don’t really have much feedback on that
Lisa
Hi Corinne! Thank you for sharing this information! I’m about to pick a paint line and wanted to confirm… are your paints listed here in order of “least toxic/best option” to “more toxic/less good option”? We have been focusing on what paints have Green Guard certification but I’m concerned about added anti-microbials based on the information you shared…. which line would you pick for a whole house paint job? We won’t be in the house for several months after painting… Thank you so much!!!
Corinne Segura, Building Biologist
no they are not in order, any 0 voc line will be good for most people but the high quality lines do have antimicrobials and might have PFAS. my preferred paint line is ECOS, which I have a review of on the site.
Hailee
Hello! DO you recommend this paints even with not knowing if they have PFAS? If they do have PFAS, what does that mean?
Corinne Segura, Building Biologist
I think at this point it is best to avoid them, they will be banned in a few years and we will look back with regret probably that we used this type of chemical all over. plus there are lots of options without PFAS now but we dont have full transparency from the big brands. even if you kow that certain lines for sure dont have them that doesnt mean the other lines definitely do.
Amanda
Thanks for this article!!
The top of the post says that Sherwin Williams will not disclose which paints contain APEs. However, a blog post that you posted a few months prior to this one says that Sherwin Williams Emerald line does not have APEs. Can you please clarify?
here’s the post for reference! https://www.mychemicalfreehouse.net/2023/09/non-toxic-0-voc-paints-from-sherwin-williams-interior-lines.html
Corinne Segura, Building Biologist
emerald, harmony and superpaint are free of APEs but we don’t have the full details on all the lines. https://homefree.healthybuilding.net/news/47-its-not-just-about-vocs-select-ape-free-paint-too
Bonnie m
Has anyone tried Emerald which is they are top-of-the-line zero voc
Corinne Segura
like all 0 VOC paints, the majority of people will do well with it but a few will react. the most reactive will have to get samples of various 0-VOC paints to see which one works best.
Kimberly
I just wanted to tell you that we spent $6,000 paint our entire indoors with the Sherwin-Williams pro mar 200 and I had a severe allergic reaction to my new home. I couldn’t be in it without a mask. I learned a lot about the so called zero VOC paint they have. Also they don’t even allow the anti microbial paints in children’s hospitals is what one of the sheerwin paint store employees told me. They had to devise one without in order to do the job. Just be careful of this stuff if you are chemical sensitive.
Kimberly
With this I wanted to add that I used ECOS over the entire project and it fixed it and I was able to move back into my home. I took about 3 days to let it dry just to be safe.
Kimberly
Corinne Segura
that’s great, I love ECOS. Do you know which S-W primer they used or trim and door paint?
Dawn Dagenbach
That is what I was wondering. I am about to paint my bathroom vanity and I told them I was very chemically sensitive and he gave me their Extreme Bond Primer which I am NOT happy about. I will be taking it back and getting the Benjamin moore primer you spoke about. I am so thankful for you and your website. It has been invaluable.
Corinne Segura
extreme bond primer is a specialty primer for hard to paint surfaces so you cant substitute just any primer for that.
Tonya
As always, thank you for your articles, Corinne.
I bought SW Duration for a whole house interior painting. The contractors started yesterday and OMG it smelled awful.
They only painted one room on one end of the house and I still had to sleep outside vs the other end of the house.
All the painters stated to the head contractor that they had headaches all last night.
I am on my way to Sherwin-Williams to swap out all my Duration for Promar 200. The store workers are clueless about which of their products is least toxic other than reading the VOC number on the spec sheet. But I figure it can’t be worse. Can it?
At this point, I wish I had chosen a different brand. Their sample paints either didn’t smell or off gassed very, very quickly. So my expectations of low toxicity were much higher than what turned out to be.
Corinne
For those highly sensitive who are staying in the house I would recommend Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion or Kiem Mineral wall paint.
