Non-Toxic Toaster Ovens (Including Convection & Air Fryer Ovens)

Published: September 6, 2023 | Updated: July 29, 2024 | Corinne Segura, Building Biologist, Dr. Lakshmi Manjunath, Toxicologist

I have messaged and talked to every company on the list so you don’t have to.

I will also explain the main chemicals of concern found in toaster ovens and what a Prop 65 warning really indicates after the list of toaster ovens.

My list of favorite non-toxic toaster ovens meets the following criteria (which is based on my opinion):

  • Are free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
  • Are made with stainless steel bodies.
  • Food contact areas are stainless steel or chrome-plated steel (or could be replaced with stainless steel items easily).
  • If a food contact area is made with uncoated aluminum or a non-stick surface, it will be noted (as you might choose to avoid that model or replace that part).
  • I will note if it carries a Prop 65 warning (though this is not a great indicator of real-life exposure to harmful chemicals in many cases).

    4. Which Prop 65 Chemicals Can Be Found in Appliances:

Non-Toxic Toaster Ovens

1. HYSapientia

This is a good pick because the backing tray is enamelled iron.

HYSapientia Air Fryer Toaster Oven Combo, 26Quart 10-in-1 Extra Large Countertop Convection Oven with LED Display Knob Control, 1800W Stainless Steel, Less Oil, Faster Cooking,7 Accessories+Recipe

Functions: HYSapientia Air Fryer Convection Oven has the following functions: air fry, grill/broil, bake, dehydrate, thaw, rotisserie, toast, fish, pizza, and steak.

Materials: HYSapientia air fryer oven is made of stainless steel on the outside and galvanized steel on the inside.

Since this has come back into stock, they have changed a few things. The crumb tray is galvanized steel, the baking tray is enameled iron, and the baking rack is chrome-plated iron.

I have contacted them to confirm the materials in this enamelled iron, as I’m not clear what that is made of.

Prop 65 warning: No

Price point: They have two sizes, both under or around $150 on Amazon. It is also available at Walmart.

2. Midea

A top pick, though there is conflicting info on what the baking tray is made of.

Midea Flexify Classic French Door Toaster Oven Air Fryer Combo, 10-in-1 Large Capacity 26.4 QT Countertop Oven, 25% Faster Cooking and 90% Less Oil, Stainless Steel

Functions: The Midea Flexify French Door Toaster Oven has the following functions: Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Broil, Toast, Pizza, Reheat, Slow Cook, Dehydrate, and Warm.

Materials: Interior Lining or Coating: The oven does not include any non-stick coating. Cooking Tray and Basket Material: The cooking tray and basket are made of stainless steel, said one rep.

The website only declares metals in the cooking tray, but one reader said the manual instructs not to damage the non-stick coating on the baking tray, so it’s not 100% clear what the baking tray is made of. There is no explicit declaration of PFAS.

Prop 65 Warning: Yes

Price point: Under or around $150.

3. BLACK+DECKER

This is the top pick in the low-cost category, but to meet all of my criteria I would replace the baking pan with a stainless steel version.

BLACK+DECKER TO3250XSBD 8-Slice Extra Wide Convection Countertop Toaster Oven, Includes Bake Pan, Broil Rack & Toasting Rack, Stainless Steel/Black

Functions: The BLACK+DECKER Extra Wide Convection Toaster Oven (8 slice) has the following functions: Bake, broil, toast, and keep warm.

You can bake lasagna, brownies, and even 12″ pizzas in this larger true convection model.

Materials:

The exterior of the body of Black+Decker toaster ovens is stainless steel.

All the interior sides of the Black+Decker toaster ovens are made of stainless steel with a zinc coating.

The rack is stainless steel (though it might be chrome-coated which is also safe, they were not that clear).

The baking pan definitely does not have a non-stick coating and is aluminum, they said on the phone (but they weren’t 100% sure about that part).

If you want to buy your own 10″ or 12″ stainless steel baking pan, this one looks good (though you might want to measure the one that comes with it first for the best match).

See all the Black+Decker toaster & convection toaster ovens here.

Prop 65 warning: Yes, the company confirmed that their toaster ovens have a Prop 65 warning for styrene and BPA in the cord. The rep advised washing your hands after handling the cord.

Price point: Under $100 on Amazon

4. Oster Digital Air Fryer Oven

This is also a top pick, though if you want to avoid raw aluminum in food contact areas, you would have to replace the pans and trays.

Oster 10 Function Air Fryer Oven Toaster Oven Countertop

Functions: Oster 10 Function Air Fryer Oven, Toaster Oven can air fry, bake, broil, defrost, dehydrate, pizza, roast, tender roast, toast and warm. Fits a 12-inch pizza

It goes up to 450℉.

Materials:

A rep says:

Its interior design is made up of galvanized steel or aluminized steel which makes it easy to clean and is safe.

The baking pan, broiling pan, and tray are made of aluminum without a non-stick coating.

You may choose to replace these pans/trays with a stainless steel option (like this one, but I would wait until you buy it and measure the size of the baking pan that comes with it) since aluminum can leach into certain foods with enough contact time (though it depends on the type of aluminum and I don’t have that kind of detailed information from them).

The air fryer basket and wire rack are chrome-plated steel, which is safe.

There are only very minor plastic parts on the exterior.

Prop 65 warning: Not posted on sales pages, but a rep said it does have the warning.

Price point: Under $160 on Amazon

5. Hamilton Beach Countertop Toaster Oven

A relatively small and inexpensive choice. Like with some of the others, my preference would be to replace the aluminum baking pan.

Hamilton Beach 6 Slice Countertop Toaster Oven With Easy Reach Roll-Top Door, Bake, Broil & Toast Functions, Auto Shutoff, Silver (31127D)

Functions: The Hamilton Beach 6 Slice Countertop Toaster Oven With Easy Reach Roll-Top Door has bake, broil and toast functions.

As a toaster oven, it fits 6 slices of toast, a 12″ pizza, or a 9″ x 11″ baking pan.

It goes up to 450℉.

Materials: The interior cavity is made of galvanized steel.

The oven rack is made of chrome-plated steel.

The mesh basket is made of chrome-plated steel.

The baking pan is made of aluminized steel. If you want to replace the baking pan with an all stainless steel option this one comes in various sizes.

This appliance does not feature any non-stick coatings.

Prop 65 warning: I don’t see one listed on sellers’ sites.

Price point: Under $100 on Amazon

6. GreenPan Bistro Oven

I use GreenPan frying pans myself, I think their “ceramic” coating is green enough. There is no exposed aluminum, but the accessories are coated in their ceramic coating.

GreenPan Bistro Stainless Steel 9-in-1 Air Fry Oven, Nonstick Baking Pan, Stainless Steel Rack, and Basket, Fast Heating, Multifunction Presets, Cool-Touch Handle, PFAS-Free, Easy Cleanup Crumb Tray

Green Pan Bistro Air Fryer Oven has the following functions: Bake, broil, air fry, proof, dehydrate, slow cook, toast, warm, and pizza.

Their non-stick coating is not nano or PFAS-based but is silica/ceramic (see the composition here).

They use a stainless steel rack and air fry basket, and aluminum baking pan coated with their non-PFAS ceramic non-stick coating.

The crumb tray is not coated.

No recycled plastic is used on the exterior they said in an email (though the exterior is mostly stainless steel anyway).

Prop 65 warning: no

Price point: Under $200 on Amazon.

Other options that were on other bloggers’ lists:

The Emeril Lagasse Air Fryer Toaster Oven might contain PFAS coatings, specifically, they sent this document about PTFE in one email. In other emails, they said it has no coating. It wasn’t clear, after many emails with the company, where the PTFE is.

Regarding KitchenAid KCO211BM I could not get passed the canned responses. They said “the material is not DuPont Teflon, PFTE, or PFOE, and is not harmful to birds.” They did not say it’s free of all PFAS.

The Galanz Air Fryer Toaster Oven has a non-stick coating which is Teflon, a rep said on the phone.

Cuisinart – they have PFAS, though it’s not clear if they are just used on the baking tray (which can be replaced if you wished).

Our Place Wonder Oven – The food contact surface coating on the baking tray is their ceramic coating, the air fry basket and wire rack are chromed steel (safe), and the crumb tray is stainless steel. They said “While there are nano-sized raw materials in the liquid state of all sol-gel ceramic coatings for our nonstick ceramic, once they are cured and hardened, these particles cannot break free. There is no possibility for nano particles to leach into food while cooking.” I guess that is assuming the coating is not damaged nor does it leach. Using nano-metals in the coating does worry me personally. They did not respond to whether they use recycled plastic parts on the exterior, however, there are only very small plastic parts on the exterior.

More air fryers can be found here (along with more info on Antimony in air fryers).

Chemicals of Concern in Toaster Ovens

1. PFAS

Toaster ovens oftentimes contain non-stick coatings on the inside which are made from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

These chemicals are referred to as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down inside your body or in the environment (source).

But is there a risk of exposure in toaster ovens?

When PFAS like PTFE coatings overheat, “they can produce fumes that are deadly to small birds and may be harmful to humans as well”.

This is a real-life “canary in the kitchen,” says Graham Peaslee, PhD, a professor of physics, chemistry, and biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame who studies PFAS.

So what is overheating?

Dr. Peaslee explained in an email that “Teflon/PTFE starts to decompose at about 500℉ (260°C). It releases gases at these temperatures that will kill small birds and cause something called “Teflon flu”. These gases include a fluorinated version of phosgene – the WWI mustard gas component.”

“Other PFAS behave differently than PTFE (Teflon), but many will evolve as gases and become inhalation hazards,” says Dr. Peaslee.

Most toaster ovens reach 450℉ max, so depending on what PFAS was used, this might not be a risk to the person using the oven.

I prefer to avoid this chemical in toaster ovens, which is based on the risks to humans and the environment. All models listed will be free of PFAS (according to the manufacturer’s information).

Environmental Risk

Dr. Manjunath explains that even if the PFAS do not become gases in the oven, there is still a concern about the use of PFAS during disposal.

Certain PFAS have been identified to persist longer in the environment than any other synthetic substance. PFAS tend to contaminate groundwater and drinking water.

Moreover, specific PFAS have the ability to accumulate in living organisms such as humans, animals, and plants, resulting in toxic effects. Some PFAS have been identified as reproductive toxins, carcinogens, and endocrine disruptors (ECHA).

Other Risks

There could be a risk of exposure if the coating is chipping of wearing down. I would avoid using acidic cleaners like vinegar as well.

2. Flame Retardants

According to the Prop 65 website, flame retardants can be added to the plastic components of appliances. (Source)

Antimony Hydroxide is a common flame retardant in cords.

Flame retardants of various types can also be a contaminant of black recycled plastic electronic waste.

My list of toaster ovens focuses on stainless steel models with very minor to no plastic on the ouside.

Children are at a higher risk of experiencing the negative impacts of flame retardants while developing.

Also, their tendency to engage in hand-to-mouth behavior and play near the ground increases their chances of coming into contact with harmful flame-retardant chemicals which leach out from appliances into dust.

There are concerns about potential neurodevelopmental effects in all individuals, says Dr Manjunath (NIEHS).

3. Non-Stick Ceramic Coatings

“Ceramic coatings” can be made of a sol–gel ceramic, which has a Si–O–Si (siloxane) polymeric structure (source).

Based on the testing that we have so far, it also seems that ceramic non-stick coatings contain various metals. F

or example, Tamara Rubin’s XRF testing of a ceramic-coated frying pan tested positive for the following metals:

Lead: 34 +/- 6 ppm (safe according to all standards — but not negative, she explains), Chromium: 7,837 +/- 284 ppm, Tin: 23 +/- 6 ppm, Platinum: 206 +/- 26 ppm, Zinc: 1,789 +/- 45 ppm, Copper: 4,965 +/- 87 ppm, Nickel: 615 +/- 41 ppm, Iron: 7,795 +/- 196 ppm, Manganese: 480 +/- 148 ppm, Vanadium: 1,039 +/- 230 ppm, and Titanium: 37,700 +/- 900 ppm. (Source).

Another brand of frying pan with a ceramic coating tested positive for Barium: 1,220 +/- 200 ppm, Chromium: 126 +/- 59 ppm, Antimony: 66 +/- 40 ppm, Iron: 2,361 +/- 177 ppm, and Titanium: 51,900 +/- 900 ppm. (Source) (And here is one more “ceramic” coated pan that tested positive for similar metals).

Some brands use nano-metals and others are free of nano-metals.

None of these metals would become a gas at 500℉.

However, not all brands with a ceramic non-stick coating are the same.

One brand, GreatJones for example, is not free of all PFAS.

So I would make sure, if you are avoiding PFAS, that you check that your ceramic coatings are free of PFAS.

There are some considerations related to potential toxicity, says Dr Manjunath. Ceramic cookware can contain Lead, Chromium, and Antimony in their substrates.

If the ceramic coating is in contact with food, it is possible that metals could leach out, though we don’t have full disclosure on what metals each brand’s ceramic coating contains and leaching tests to see how much they leach.

4. Aluminum

Some trays and pans in toaster ovens can be made of aluminum.

This is especially relevant when cooking wet, acidic foods in uncoated aluminum.

“This is particularly to be avoided since they cause more of the metal to leach into the food than dry, non-acidic items.” (source)

However, aluminum cookware that has been anodized or clad in a non-reactive metal such as stainless steel or a non-stick coating, does not leach into or react with foods. (source)

While some studies suggest that cooking in aluminum utensils or using aluminum foils is not harmful, other studies suggest it may lead to toxic levels of aluminum in humans (all those links are here).

It is important to note that toxicity concerns become more relevant in certain individuals (source).

This same study states that leaching was negligible, and so is the risk to human health, when using hard anodized aluminum utensils.

They also recommend the items should be washed with soft materials, not metallic scrubs to maintain the coating. A third way to mitigate risk is not to cook with aluminum at high temperatures.

I will note if the toaster oven has any aluminum parts that are in contact with the food. However, it was not possible to find out from the companies if the aluminum was anodized or contained another protective coating.

5. Prop 65 Chemicals of Concern

What is Prop 65?

Proposition 65 is a warning label for Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Any product that is sold in California will have this label even at retailers outside of California.

The list contains naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals. It is updated yearly and there are currently 900 chemicals on the list in 2024.

All toaster ovens will have at least one Prop 65 chemical. I would not avoid brands due to this label myself, due to the fact that the exposure limit is often not assessed.

Exposure Limit?

Technically this label is for “significant exposures” and the chemicals need not be listed if “the exposure is low enough to pose no significant risk of cancer or is significantly below levels observed to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.”

However, in reality, the exposure risk is not usually calculated and you will still see the label if the product contains only trace levels of the Prop 65 chemicals or even when the chemicals are enclosed within the product and there is no reasonable way to gain exposure to them.

Are Companies Adding This to Everything?

It does seem like there are companies that add this to all their products even though they might not contain a chemical on the list, if the exposure is extremely minimal, or exposure is not expected with regular use.

There is no penalty for providing an unnecessary warning.

Toaster ovens will contain one or more of these Prop 65 chemicals, but mostly in their internal parts. I will note if the appliance carries a Prop 65 warning.

I will not be making a judgment on whether it’s a significant exposure.

Which Prop 65 Chemicals Can Be Found in Appliances:

1. Phthalates: may be present in plastic components of appliances (specifically they are usually added to flexible vinyl) according to the Prop 65 website. Electrical wiring is often coated in vinyl, and there may be other PVC parts in appliances. Black plastic that is recycled can also contain phthalates as a contamination.

2. BPA: or other bisphenols could be found in plastic (PVC or polycarbonate) components of a toaster oven.

3. Styrene: is also something I have seen a toaster oven company disclose. This could be a component of SBR rubber, some plastics when heated up, or electrical parts and cords (source).

4. Flame retardants: may be present in plastic components of appliances according to the Prop 65 website. Electrical wiring and cords also usually contain flame retardants.

5. Antimony: Tamara Rubin has found that most appliance electrical cords will test positive for Antimony (as a component of added flame retardants). When she tests electrical cords of appliances, she normally finds the level in the range of 5,000 to 15,000 parts per million (ppm). Antimony can also be found in recycled plastic.

6. Arsenic: Tamara says she often finds trace Arsenic in black plastic handles of kitchen tools and appliances. She believes it is likely a contaminant of the black pigmentation. In one test she found extremely low levels of Arsenic in the black plastic handle of a kettle (3 +/- 1 ppm). This is safe, by any standard she explains, though it’s still a Prop 65 Chemical.

7. Lead: is almost always a component of brass parts, and it can be found in plastic (both recycled and new), solder, electrical cords, nuts, painted parts, and more in appliances.

8. Nickel: is part of stainless steel.

9. Some PFAS: three PFAS were added to Prop 65: PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA. PFOS and PFOA had been mostly phased out of use in the United States by the time they were listed, but were still used in products manufactured internationally and imported for sale. PTFE (Teflon) is not on the list, but is often contaminated with PFOA (source).

10. Other Proposition 65 chemicals: may also be present in enclosed components of the appliance (such as printed circuit boards). During normal use, consumer exposure to these chemicals is expected to be negligible according to the Prop 65 website.

Is Galvanized Steel a Concern?

Zinc in electrogalvanized steel (which is likely probably used in toaster ovens, not hot dipped) doesn’t vaporize until above the temperature that toaster ovens get to.

Dr Manjunath sites this study “when zinc is heated to temperatures above 500°C in the flame during oxygen cutting or in the arc during welding, zinc oxide particles are released into the air as zinc oxide fume and can be inhaled (Mueller and Seger 1985).”

Toaster ovens don’t reach over 500°C. Most go up to 450.

Black and Decker review: I bought the one on this list a few weeks ago and the burn off is horrible. The smell is incredibly toxic, strong, and persistent, even after 5 or 10 minutes on high heat which I ran it on multiple times over a couple of weeks. At the rate it was going, I lost confidence that thing was ever going to neutralize, or if it did, it would take an insanely long time to do so and well outside the return window for a refund. Alas. The search continues…. What’s frustrating is that everything is made so poorly these days that even if there are products that are less toxic than others, there are numerous problems with them on other fronts, at least according to reviews. This problem is occurring across the board and across industries as far as I can tell.

I haven’t tried any other brands. In general, I’m super sensitive to oven-related burn offs. Whenever I’ve had to buy a new range and do the oven burn off, the idea that it will only take one or two burn offs to neutralize the smell is nowhere near what my experience has been. I usually have to burn it off countless times over many weeks, if not months, before I would dare to use it due to the persistent stench. Same goes for new dishwasher. Unfortunately… Maybe I should try the Green Pan oven. I generally like their pots and pans, though their silicon cooking utensils stink and when I used them they absolutely made the food taste very wierd, so I threw them all out. For me, the jury is still out on silicone. Maybe a bit too much hype about it being safe. Not sure.

Thank you for taking the time to share your research on safer product options. I really do appreciate how much work goes into gathering and posting this information. I wanted to follow up about the HYSapientia item because when I looked more closely at the materials list before purchasing, I saw that it includes a non-stick coating.

I contacted the company directly, and they confirmed the exterior is stainless steel and the interior is galvanized steel with a coating they describe as non-toxic, but they did not specify what the coating is made from. I reached out again for clarification and am waiting to hear back.

I’m finding it increasingly frustrating how difficult it is to rely on reviews or product descriptions when you’re trying to avoid chemical exposures. As someone with multiple chemical sensitivities, I really need full transparency about coatings and materials, and “non-toxic” without details doesn’t help me make a safe decision.

If anyone has found truly coating-free options (solid stainless steel, glass, or other inert materials) or companies that clearly disclose what their coatings are made of, I would be very grateful for recommendations.

It’s probably going to work better to buy the toaster oven first bc I could not find out the exact size of the baking pan for all of them. Other than that I would not be too worried about where you get the stainless as long as it looks and feels like stainless steel not aluminum.

    Hi Corinne,

First I want to thank you so much for creating this amazing website. Second, I wanted to share that GreenPan just told me the interior of their bistro air fryer is aluminum, which doesn’t seem to match with what they told other commentors on this post. I have pasted the email below for your reference.

    Hello,
Thank you for contacting The Cookware Company.
Please see air fryer details below:
    The interior(sides/walls) are aluminum.
    The racks are stainless steel.
The sheet pan if included is aluminum coated with our nontoxic ceramic coating.

I hope you find this information helpful.

        Hi,
I just wanted to comment where you said ‘nickel is part of stainless steel’. There is actually less nickel in stainless steel 403, but there’s a lot of nickel in 304 which is 18/8 or 18/10.
some of Oster brands have 304 and some have 403.

I was told by a Midea representative that the accessories are coated with PTFE. Trying to get a representative to give me a straight answer about the materials of the accessories and whether they had a non stick coating took a chat message, multiple phone calls and two weeks of emails in which the representative never answered my repeated questions about a non stick coating. Finally, a rep on the phone told me that the accessories are coated with PFTE/Teflon. By email, I was told that the bake rack is nickel-chrome plated steel, the bake pan is aluminized steel, the fry basket is nickel chrome plated steel and the interior is aluminized steel.

We had an unfortunate accident with our Emeril French door oven and as I was looking for “no -toxic” I came across your page. Your information on Emeril was short so I decided to try the Midea one. Recently heard Parchment paper is toxic? When I use my baking trays I always use parchment paper. I do believe Emeril’s cooking tray is all aluminum based on enclosed booklet. In regard to Midea, do you have links for SS trays that would fit? Thank you!

Can you please recommend a classic pop-up toaster for toasting bread (not toaster over) which is free from all of these toxins? Thanks you

I did a great deal of research and was leaning towards the Wonder Oven as well and saw this and other similar articles.
Then, I decided not to replace my 30 year old toaster oven that is no longer working. I have a Thermador wall oven for bake/broil and everything else, a counter top broiler for convenience that plugs in and uses 110v, the stove, and a grill outside to use anytime other than winter. So, I asked myself, why do I really need to replace the toaster oven. What I did was research and buy a few new cookware items to replace older ones. A new Caraway non-toxic steamer and matching 3 qt pot, new Alva non-toxic non-stick sautee pan/lid and frying pans of various sizes to replace older ones that were also safe. They work on stovetop or oven. These give me some updated extra options for cooking. So, I’m done. Thanks for the info you provided on options.

Is your only objection to the Our Place Wonder Oven that the food contact surface coating on the baking tray is their ceramic coating (I’m not minimizing this, I just know I can replace and/or work around it). I’m between this and HYSapientia, but I prefer the size of the Our Place one.

    Hello,
Your article stated that the cord for the Black & Decker contained Styrene and BPA. Otherwise, the unit itself followed good guidelines and stainless steel. I read about BPA and washing hands after handling cords. However, with the Styrene that is also in the cord, that does emit into the air. Articles state it’s important to reduce all contact with styrene to the lowest possible level, especially as it may be a human carcinogen. Having that unit in the kitchen where food is prepared is a worry. Having it anywhere would be a worry. After leaning towards purchase, I’m not wary and against it, because of this. Can you comment? Thank you.

appliances are never without a pretty long list chemicals of concern. that is just how they are made. flame retardants are present and probably the most concerning (though less concerning than the types used in older appliances), many contain PFAS, BPA, plasticizers, lead, etc. All appliances that I have seen have some off-gassing at first. The styrene in the cord is not something I would worry about in particular or single out as more concerning. It may off-gas minimally.

Thank you very much for the reply. I decided not to replace my current non-working toaster oven. I got rid of it, and I have several other cooking options that I have acquired during its lifetime, and it’s just not necessary anymore. When I stopped to think about it and what I use it for nowadays, getting another would just be either duplication or a waste of money, because of other updated cooking options. Much appreciated for your input.

If a baking pan has a nonstick coating but Farberware says “Responsibly made without PFAS, PFOA, lead, or cadmium. Product design does not involve intentionally adding to the interior nonstick coating any of these substances which may otherwise be present in the environment” –does that mean it is safe, or still bad because anything (that is not ceramic) nonstick is just bad? I noticed on the Walmart website the same product includes a Prop 65 warning for titanium dioxide, other chemicals. Just confused because I was drawn to it because it claimed to be free of the bad stuff.

If no PFAS, cadmium or lead that is good, though doesn’t cover everything covers the big ones.
That does sound like ceramic though. What are they saying that it is?

It’s carbon steel with a coating. I asked Farberware if PTFE was present because it said it was PFAS, PFOA, lead, and cadmium free and this was their response: “The PTFE is a chemical that are part of the nonstick coating which is nontoxic and safe for food contact” But I found this one on Amazon that is Nonstick Carbon Steel with silicone in the coating and the listing claims to be PTFE/PFOA/PFAS/Lead/Cadmium/BPA and chemical free…too good to be true?

Hi, profuse thanks for the article. Did HYSapientia confirm (for #1 on this list) that 100% of the interior, linings and trays/baskets are not coated in any non-stick coatings or paints containing PFAS or PTFE. I saw on the Amazon page that there was a label that said “no PFAS”, but does that mean there is still PTFE? Do they have any certifications to prove the lack of all these chemicals?
Moreover, is there any aluminium in that model, I couldn’t find any mention of it despite it being mentioned in the article
    Many thanks

PTFE is a PFAS so if they say no PFAS then it means no teflon/PTFE. But I don’t see where it says that on Amazon, where do you see that?

They would have to declare PFAS on the box to sell in Colorado (that is the closest thing a certification for appliances)

“On and after January 1, 2024, a manufacturer of cookware sold in the state that contains intentionally added PFAS chemicals in the handle of the product or in any product surface that comes into contact with food, foodstuffs, or beverages is required to:

List the presence of PFAS chemicals on the product label of the cookware; and
Include a statement on the product label of the cookware that directs the consumer to a website with information about why PFAS chemicals were intentionally added to the product.

On and after January 1, 2024, a manufacturer of cookware is prohibited from making a statement that the cookware is free of PFAS chemicals unless no individual PFAS chemical is intentionally added to the cookware.”

Just a quick addition – Does the HYSapientia have a prop 65 warning, sorry I needed to clarify since I saw many different answers in the comments. What parts would this affect?

To top up, I recently reached out to Hysapentia –> “If you are inquiring about products from the UK site, The interior of this oven is made of stainless steel and is free of non-stick coatings and toxic substances. There is no plastic inside. The Proposition 65 warning is specific to California, and testing is not mandatory, so we are FDA-certified. The steel used in our products has undergone extensive food-grade testing and complies with FDA regulations. This ensures that the materials used in the manufacturing process of our air fryers are non-toxic and safe for food preparation.”

Does the prop 65 thing apply to UK products as well?

I do not believe they have a prop 65 label but that response was rather confusing. Prop 65 label is mandatory in CA if it contains the banned substances and if they are a significant risk. Though it’s not a test that they need to pass. It’s up to them to declare. And normally that label is on all boxes that go out to all of the US so that they dont need to create different boxes. Not sure if that would be on a UK shipment though.

    Hi Corinne,

I recently purchased the HYSapientia 26QT Stainless Steel Air Fryer Oven With Rotisserie (1800W, 10-in-1 Countertop Oven) and reached out to the company to confirm the materials. Their reply might be helpful to you, since the trays are not stainless steel:

“Our ovens and accessories do not have a non-stick coating.
The crumb tray is galvanized, the baking tray is enameled iron, and the baking rack is chrome-plated iron.”

Even if I get a new vacuum cleaner or a shampooer, I put a pan of vinegar. I put an oven on top of it. I stand the shampoo on top of it or whatever I have even the sewing machine I cover the whole thing with plastic bag tucked the plastic bag under and I’ll leave it for two or three days it works for me and it is the only way I have found to fight these VOCs vinegar and I use steam as well with other things my MCS is severe

You’ll have to see if they have a public statement about PFAS and then ask them about individual parts. You can also tell by looking at them most of the time, if they have non-stick parts or fingerprint resistant stainless steel.

I had a couple of breville ovens. They advertised at the time, that their oven was non-toxic. None of the harmful plastic coatings found in teflon. I used these ovens for many years and every day every month and year over year that thing dug my grave deeper and deeper. I was in the verge of a heart attack and circling the drain. Then one day, the oven door broke. I unplugged it. Suddenly my sense of taste began to return. I thank God that oven door broke
And saved my life. Thank you Universe.

Thanks for the article. A couple of FYI’s based on my experience:

There are models of the Cuisinart countertop convection/toaster ovens that do not have non-stick interiors. I have one that is most likely anodized aluminum or anodized steel.

However, it being impossible to clean anything greasy that bakes onto it, I am finally retiring it after 5 years of otherwise perfect service. They’ve become so expensive, though, I am switching to the Black & Decker as I want to have at the width for at least a 12″ pizza, or, ideally a 9×13 pan.

The Emeril oven looks great but it isn’t wide enough for me. But fyi it has an anodized aluminum or other anodized metal interior. Doesn’t look like non-stick to me.

Thanks for all your research. I’m keeping an eye on Amazon for your top pick. Previously much less expensive than @ Walmart.

On the Amazon comments for your top pick, one person wrote that the interior was not actually stainless steel but instead was anodized aluminum. I doubt that’s true but everyone else said it was easy to clean!.

What are your thoughts on the Breville Smart Convection Toaster Oven Air?
I received this for Christmas and I can return at Williams Sonoma but the options of a toaster oven through that store is limited. Looking for one with all the features BUT also chemical free. Would love to keep it but I am traumatized by the PFAS in nonstick especially since I have suffered from infertility. Thank you for your help!

with almost all brands and models I would personally replace the baking tray with a stainless steel options. so if you can do that, and if the interior lining of the whole oven is not PFAS (which it usually isn’t) then I would just go with that

if it’s non-toxic by my specifications most of them won’t have any non-stick coating on the interior walls that makes it easy to clean. the greenpan one does have the non PFAS non-stick coating on the inteior walls I believe though do double check

This oven TOB-260N1NAS has been discontinued in the nonstick version and replaced with fully stainless. When I called they confirmed no nonstick surfaces. They couldn’t tell me, however, what the enameled baking tray is made of and when I asked about the pizza stone and oven racks, they directed me to the chemical disclosures, but I think it hasn’t been posted there. I’ve emailed them to ask for more information.

Please scratch my response. They don’t advertise that it has nonstick surfaces like they did for the last version (and the agent on the phone told me it doesn’t have them), but then both via email and another phone call they said it does have nonstick surfaces and the same disclosures as the prior model. Sigh.

Hello Corinne! I am hoping you can provide some guidance on selecting between the Green Pan Elite Convection Air Fry Oven and the HYSapientia. Per my communication with Green Pan in January of this year the following materials listed below are used in this version of the Elite countertop oven. My biggest concern was the use of galvanized steel on the interior and it releasing toxic fumes into the air. The information online is confusing around this topic and after reading about the concerns of galvanized steel on Tamara Rubin’s website, I was thinking this countertop oven would be a no go at this point. However, after reviewing the information below, you mentioned it would not be of concern. I am also less concerned with what accessories these come with as I’d use all stainless pans anyhow. My family and I are in need of some sort of countertop oven quickly as our leased home has a gas oven and it’s unbearable to cook something in there. Any and all guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you again!

    FROM GREEN PAN REP:
The interior of the Elite oven is galvanized steel.
The oven racks and broiler rack is stainless steel.
The crumb tray, basket , baking, and pizza accessories are ceramic coated over aluminum.

No need for any chemicals like PTFE, PFOA or any other type of PFAS and we do not add any Cadmium or Lead. GreenPan cookware is also BPA free.
Our Thermolon coating does not contain any Nano particles. Accordingly, there is no possibility for Nano particles to leach into the food when cooking with GreenPan.

this is likely to burn off a thin layer of manufacturing residue, oils, or coatings that are applied during the production process. you can also wipe it down first with dishsoap everywhere that can get wet. if you have MCS you could run it outside the first time you run it.

I recently read that your number one pick here, HYSapientia, has aluminum in it. And when that heats up it will probably out-gas aluminum fumes, which are highly toxic to the body. You might want to do a bit more research to look into this. I was going to buy it until I read that. Unfortunately, I have researched so many ovens I cannot find the page that mentions aluminum. But I would be careful and check it out. Also, many of the trays in the supposed non-toxic ovens are aluminum or have a non-stick coating. Thank you fr all you are doing to educate and help us create healthy homes. I so appreciate it. 🙂

        Learn more
According to information available, while the Hysapientia stainless steel air fryer oven may claim to be PFAS, PFOA, and PTFE free, it does still carry a Prop 65 warning which indicates the presence of chemicals that could potentially be harmful, including PFAS, which is likely due to the non-stick coating on the internal components, despite claims otherwise; some users have reported disappointment regarding this discrepancy between advertised features and the Prop 65 warning on the product.

        Key points to consider:

        Prop 65 warning:
The presence of a Prop 65 warning on the product suggests that it may contain chemicals considered harmful by California law, potentially including PFAS.
        Customer reports:
Some users have reported that their Hysapientia air fryer came with a Prop 65 warning despite claims of being PFAS free.
        Lack of transparency:
There might not be complete transparency regarding the exact materials used in the non-stick coating, leading to confusion about its safety.

Just an FYI I spoke with a rep with Midea. Your top choice is inaccurate unfortunately and negates everything after that. It has a prop 65 warning… you left no details on this one but I contacted them directly and they said:

“For this specific unit, the warning could be due to the presence of chemicals in the materials used for the oven’s construction, such as certain plastics or coatings. It’s a common precautionary measure to inform consumers, especially in California, about potential exposures.”

AKA it has PFAS. Even the rep agreed with me. Therefore everything you wrote after that was null and void. I still have not found a true PFAS free unit.

Does the baking tray look and feel like it’s not pure metal but has a coating on it? I’ll add something to the post but it’s not clear if it has PFAS (it can be nonstick without PFAS). New laws for 2025 don’t allow PFAS in cookware in Minnesota and in Maine it must be declared.

First and foremost, thank you so much for your insightful article and all the incredible work you do! What you’re doing is truly meaningful, and I deeply appreciate it!

What do you think of Midea Flexify French Door Air Fryer Oven? I emailed them about the materials and this is what they reply:

Interior Lining or Coating: The oven does not include any non-stick coating, which is a positive aspect as it avoids the use of potentially harmful non-stick chemicals.
Cooking Tray and Basket Material: The cooking tray and basket are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is generally considered safe for cooking as it does not leach harmful chemicals into food.
Other Materials: The oven’s construction primarily uses stainless steel and other standard materials for kitchen appliances. However, the presence of a California Proposition 65 warning indicates that the product may contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. This warning is common for many products and does not necessarily mean the product is unsafe, but it is important to be aware of.

        Hello Corrine,
First of all thank you for all of this research and hard work. Much to my my families’ dismay I had put off getting a toaster oven/air fryer due to the overwhelm I felt when trying to find a non-toxic model. Since I could not find the Hysapientia model and I read your article prior to you adding the Midea model, I ended up doing more research using your guidelines. I ended up purchasing a NuWave Bravo XL Pro. They have two versions of this model, one is marked PSAF free because it contains accessories that are supposedly all PSAF free. The griddle/grill that they include has a ceramic coating. The interior of unit is and crumb tray are aluminized coated steel.
Have you researched this brand before? I feel pretty sure it is safe but now I am second guessing myself. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you…

    Hi,

Thanks so much for all your great information. I bought a Toshiba ChefFry Toaster Oven/Air fryer. It came with the Prop 65 warning on the box–which was not on the Amazon website. The warning was for diboron trioxide, nickel and nickel compounds, chromium compounds, and PFAS. I called Toshiba and they said all those chemicals were only used on the outside of the machine, but they said there was a nonstick coating on the inside (which was not Teflon) that would burn off. I see you said that there would always be Prop 65 chemicals inside a toaster oven. I’m trying to use a toaster oven more because my rental apartment has a gas stove, and I thought this would be a good appliance to add to the mix, but it seems there is no avoiding one problem or another. As someone with chronic health issues, it is all very disheartening.

PFAS are in the non stick coatings which are inside, they do not burn off. I would prefer to avoid PFAS

    Hi,

Thank you so much for this amazing information and insight!! I did want to get your further perspective on the The BLACK+DECKER Extra Wide Convection Toaster Oven. I just called to confirm the specs, and they did confirm the outer is stainless steel and the inner is stainless steel with zinc coating. However, they did say that there are some interior, electrical component parts that you can not access (such as the timer) that are not BPA free. I did not understand fully, and was hoping you could provide more context on this and the overall safety / risk concern.

    Thank you so much!

I was searching for a more compact toaster oven for my mom.
Following your tips and information I found the Hamilton Beach 31193C Digital Display Countertop.
I was concerned if interior was stainless steel.
Any information regarding the safety and quality of this one would be helpful.

Galvanized plate liner for the inside (non stick for easy cleaning it also says) and the outside material stainless steel. The same goes for the trays it comes with (galvanized).

Okay than you that’s good then, I just wanted to know if for the interior that material was good because I’m pretty I can replace the trays etc. I copy paste what the description says here: This toaster ovens countertop comes with an electroplated baking rack, an aluminum baking tray, a galvanized sheet crumb tray, an electroplated frying basket, a pair of heat-resistant gloves which makes it easy to handle hot food, and a user manual. The whole rich accessories enable you to bake all kinds of foods with ease.

ah yes the crumb tray is often galvanised, but that is not what food touches. the baking tray is aluminum. whether they are referring to the galvanized interior sides as non stick is not know for certain, it could be but it could also be PFAS

I prefer the one on the link; however, I don’t understand whether or not you are saying that the interior of this smaller one is made of steel as well.

Hi I currently saw the Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven on sale so I was wondering if it’s a good option? On their website says the exterior is stainless steel and the interior material is metal. Is that a good thing? Also the Bella air fryer toaster oven mentions that the interior is a non toxic material and pfas, would that also be a good option?

You should also be aware that galvanized stainless steel is not OK for toaster ovens.  ” For hot-dipped galvanized steel the recommended maximum temperature is 392 F (200 C), before the metal presents a toxicity risk.”.  Aluminized stainless is good to about 1000 F if unscratched.

That is not a reliable source, that quote. Scientific sources say that zinc in electrogalvanized steel (which is what is probably used in toaster ovens, not hot dipped) doesn’t vaporise until much higher temperatures. But I will have the toxicologist look it over.

They claim no non-stick and stainless steel interior, but theie chemical disclosure page also shows PTFE, Styrene, BPA, and carbon black. I suspect the PTFE is on the baking pan, the Styrene part of ABS feet and the carbon black and BPA due to the power cord – we shall see. I will let you know what I find out. Dr Manjunath sites this study “Burning of zinc yields zinc oxide. When zinc is heated to temperatures above 500°C in the flame during oxygen cutting or in the arc during welding, zinc oxide particles are released into the air as zinc oxide fume and can be inhaled (Mueller and Seger 1985).”

it would be a god idea to avoid plastics with bisphenols or recycled e waste plastic on the exterior regardless of temperature. however I don’t think polycarbonate which has bisphenols is what the plastic knobs are made of

I was very interested in the Wonder Oven prior to reading your article (which was magnificently helpful and I thank you for writing it!). I really wanted it based on function and size. I actually ordered the Green Pan oven but it was way to big for my tiny space. So, I contacted Our Place, the manufacturer of the Wonder Oven and copied and pasted your comment regarding this oven.
This is the response I received:
    “Hi Janine,

Francis here from Our Place. Thank you for reaching out!

I understand how the mention of nano-materials can raise questions, so let me help clarify.

The use of nano-materials in this way is common in modern nonstick coatings, and these coatings are rigorously tested for safety, including their non-leaching properties. Still, I understand your concern and want to assure you that these coatings are designed to be food-safe when properly maintained.

It’s important to emphasize that the safety of this ceramic coating depends on the integrity of the surface. As long as the coating is undamaged and properly cared for (avoiding metal utensils or abrasive scrubbing that might scratch the surface), there is no risk of particles being released during cooking.

Again, we understand your concern but as long as the bake tray does not have deep scratches that would show the core, there is nothing to worry about. I also want to note that we offer 100 days for returns for refunds, if ever you change your mind, please let us know so we can provide the return instructions.”

It’s not a perfect answer but I did end up ordering it anyway. I need something multifunctional that is small and I will diligently keep track of the condition of the pans.
Just wanted to share this. Thanks again for your handy work!

Thank you so much for your work. Would you comment on potential lead contamination that could be in a zinc coated surface such as the interior of the toaster ovens? There seems to be some debate online about this, but I would like to refer to actual research. My thoughts are (1) how likely would it even be that there is lead in the zinc coating and (2) if there is lead in the zinc coating, could it potentially vaporize? I read that lead could vaporize when heated to 750 degrees F, which would be above the threshold of the toaster oven anyways? Thanks again.

Without having test results from toaster ovens specifically, I can’t say for sure. Galvanized steel used in other applications like in gardening can have lead. But yeah it won’t vaporize at 450 degrees in a toaster oven.

    Hello,
Mama of child with severe chemical sensitivities, and I am searching for a countertop oven (or regular oven).

    Mamavation mentions:
    PowerXL https://powerxlproducts.com/kitchen/air_fryer_ovens?nb_platform=partnerize&nb_clid=4766791258&nb_subid=211426&nb_creative=8-12760
is there any chance you have also looked into this one?

Also, have you read ‘About Us’ on the HYSapientia website? I find it a little bit odd….here is their Brand Story:

HYSapientia was born in the highly intelligent society, we noticed the traditional way of cooking leads to the time and energy waste, as well as unhealthy eating habits. Therefore, we are dedicated to creating smart, safe and efficient kitchen appliances in order to achieve the goal of easy cooking and healthy eating. Thank you for any help you can provide regarding a nontoxic countertop oven (or standard stove/oven).

Hi Corinne, I am so appreciative of the research you have done on these toasters! I am wondering if you ever looked into Zojiyushi’s Micom Toaster Oven ET-ZLC30. I emailed customer service to inquire about the materials in the inside of the oven and recieved the following response:

“The oven interior and parts of the Micom Toaster Oven ET-ZLC30 do not have a non-stick coating.
The oven interior, baking tray, broil tray and mesh rack are made of aluminized steel.
Any materials coming in contact with food and beverages are BPA free and are safe and hygienic.”

This sounds promising but I was curious your thoughts given your expertise!

    Hello,

Thank you so much for taking the time to do the research on these products.

I came across two models from GE that claim to have stainless steel interiors. They don’t have non-stick coatings. They do have a Prop 65 warning, but they were unwilling to give any detailed information about why there was a warning.

    Here are the two models.

I am so thankful for this article. my almost 3 year old son was diagnosed with autism and we did some heavy metal testing on him and he tested SO HIGH for antimony and I couldn’t figure out why. now I know it was because we used our air fryer to prepare his food every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. Would appear we were slowly poisoning his nerves and could very well be why he experiences neurological delays. I threw my air fryer in the garbage and I pray we can heal with with a good detox. thank you for writing this

Hello! I really wanted to buy the Black & Decker toaster oven but wanted to check with the company first on the materials used because sometimes that changes. I reached out to their customer service and they confirmed the zinc coating on the interior but they wouldn’t tell me what the coating is covering, saying it’s “proprietary” – which isn’t very helpful. They also said the trays and bake pan are aluminum.

Thanks for this article! I’ve researched toaster ovens oven the years but never came up with a clear solution. Not overly sensitive to off-gassing; just interested in less toxic products. I had an Anova Precision Oven (huge and pricey, but wow, good oven). It’s all stainless, as far as I know. (Someone correct me if not.) I use my own pans. Sadly getting rid of it as I move out of my current place with mold exposure. Link: https://anovaculinary.com/products/anova-precision-oven

Aiming for a more reasonably priced option now to replace it. I was looking at your top rec (HYSapientia) and it looks like they may be going out of business or backordered. Now Google is trying to sell me on the Our Place Wonder Oven instead. The pan is nonstick ceramic, but the internal components say they’re stainless. Has anyone used this Wonder Oven?

The non stick tray may be of similar composition to their frying pan material which tested as follows: Lead: 34 +/- 6 ppm (safe according to all standards — but not negative, she explains), Chromium: 7,837 +/- 284 ppm, Tin: 23 +/- 6 ppm, Platinum: 206 +/- 26 ppm, Zinc: 1,789 +/- 45 ppm, Copper: 4,965 +/- 87 ppm, Nickel: 615 +/- 41 ppm, Iron: 7,795 +/- 196 ppm, Manganese: 480 +/- 148 ppm, Vanadium: 1,039 +/- 230 ppm, and Titanium: 37,700 +/- 900 ppm.

since this is a question for a toxicologist i cannot answer this one, i would expect parchment paper to be a good enough barrier but I’m not positive. Make sure the parchment paper itself is free of PFAS

Thanks so much for all this research! I just bought a Cuisinart Chef’s Convection oven. Any thoughts on this product? I did research, but I don’t think I covered what I needed to. It can be so hard to know which websites are accurate and which are not. I would love your opinion. I’ll switch it out for another product if need be. It also comes with a tray that I’ve been using, but after reading the comments here, I realize that it must be aluminum. As another reader mentioned, it can be hard to find trays on Amazon that are both definitely safe and fit the product dimensions.

One more question – I’ve recently purchased Green Pan pots and pans (again after doing research). Do you think their products are safe?

The heating shield over the heating tubes are usually metal. But if there is a hard plastic support in there it’s probably PP or PE. I would consider that safe. There are definitely going to be plastic parts in the hidden parts which also will be heating up from the oven.

      under non stick ceramic coatings the first one is the coating used by Our Place: “Lead: 34 +/- 6 ppm (safe according to all standards — but not negative, she explains), Chromium: 7,837 +/- 284 ppm, Tin: 23 +/- 6 ppm, Platinum: 206 +/- 26 ppm, Zinc: 1,789 +/- 45 ppm, Copper: 4,965 +/- 87 ppm, Nickel: 615 +/- 41 ppm, Iron: 7,795 +/- 196 ppm, Manganese: 480 +/- 148 ppm, Vanadium: 1,039 +/- 230 ppm, and Titanium: 37,700 +/- 900 ppm.”

Their oven is super cute, it’s smaller than usual so if you wanted to replace that non stick tray that goes inside you would have to see if you can find one that size.

Thanks for doing all this work. I had just read an Amazon review of a convection oven with a galvanized steel interior by a bee keeper that said it’s very toxic when heated so I did a search and it seems you can’t heat galvanized steel over 390 F or it gives off very toxic fumes. Search “does galvanized steel give off toxic fumes when heated”. Why don’t they use stainless steel inside?
